Kofferdrager in actie met de football

De koffer in pidgeon impossible

Toen ik dit briljante filmpje zag vroeg ik me af hoe dat koffertje heet dat gebruikt wordt om atoombommen te lanceren. Zit er een rode knop in?

In het jargon heet dat ding ook wel de ‘Nuclear Football‘. Andere namen zijn: Atomic Football, President’s Emergency Satchel, The Button, The Red Button, The Black Box, of gewoon The Football.

Hierin zitten de codes om het gebruik van nucleaire wapens te autoriseren. Teleurstellend nogal, maar er zit geen Grote Rode Knop in, wel een handboek met mogelijke aanvalsscenario’s, een overzicht van schuilplaatsen en waarschijnlijk communicatieapparatuur. Het ding is permanent in de buurt van de Amerikaanse president.

De naam komt van een aanvalsplan met de codenaam ‘Drop-Kick‘. De koffer weegt 18 kilo en is gemaakt van aluminium gevat in een reisbestendige zwartleren hoes.
